In 1987, Melissa moved to the mountains of Montana and never looked back. She completed her degree in Environmental Science Education and has dedicated her career to inspiring conservation through relevant, first-hand encounters with the natural world. She is a dynamic and enthusiastic professional naturalist guide with over 28 years of experience leading backpacking, fly-fishing, rafting, hiking, natural history and cultural trips around the globe. She is also an accomplished photographer and enjoys helping guests capture exceptional images of nature and wildlife. So, whether exploring the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the wilds of the U.S., the arctic wilderness of Svalbard & eastern Greenland, the bamboo forests of China, or the nursery lagoons of Baja’s grey whales you can be sure she is excited to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with you!
What is your favourite place to visit in your country and why?
Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin in winter! There is something so magical about Yellowstone this time of year. Sparkling frost covers the trees as steam fills the air and jets of water erupt into the sky. Walking quietly amongst the bubbling hotsprings while taking in the vibrant colors of the living organisms that call them home is an otherworldly experience not to be missed. It engenders a sense of awe that is difficult to describe.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love to facilitate lasting memories through meaningful encounters with the natural world. Getting out to find wildlife or being in the right place for sunset are a wonderful start along that path but teaching guests about what they are seeing goes so much further. Understanding just a little bit more about what they are experiencing helps to keep those memories alive longer. I also love to help my guests capture beautiful images of those experiences so that the feeling of a trip well traveled is forever present in those photos.
