Imvelo cheetah update

Cheetahs are high on Imvelo guests’ wish lists of wildlife to see on safari. Well known as the fastest land mammal, easily achieving speeds of 100 km/h (60 mph) or more, they have been icons in human culture since ancient times. Bomani and Camelthorn are situated in an area that is excellent for cheetah sightings, and many guests are priviledged to see them while on safari. Just how privileged becomes clearer when you consider that females have home ranges of some 100 km2 (40 m2) square miles in this area of Hwange.

These photos are of Short Tail, a female known to researchers as HNP 047 with her cub and then also ones of her sister, our much-photographed celebrity cheetah Cindy with her three cubs, all recently spotted around Bomani. We are extremely excited to have Short Tail back, as she has not been seen in our area since she separated from mom Queenie. What stories she could tell of where she has been since 2017 when she and Cindy were born close to Bomani! One of Imvelo’s first pictures of the two young sisters was this incredible shot of 5 cheetah in a tree close to camp – mom Queenie with her 4 cubs – of which 2 are Short Tail and Cindy and now there are four more cubs, the next generation to these strong female cheetahs who have so expertly cared for their young ones with many predator threats around them!
