Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda is home to 13 primate species and travelers to the park can enjoy a guided forest trek in search of the most popular – the chimpanzee. There are 9 diurnal primates, including the vervet, red-tail, L’Hoest’s, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked manabey, red colobus, black and white colobus, olive baboon, and lastly the famous chimpanzee. Although chimp sightings in Kibale cannot be guaranteed, chances of encountering the primates stand at more than 90%. While trekking in Kibale Forest, travelers can also expect to see 5 or 6 other types of primates, be surrounded by bird song and lush, dense forest. Walking in Kibale is generally quite easy thanks to well-maintained trails and relatively flat terrain. Classic Africa Safaris recommends a minimum 2-night stay in the Kibale Forest region to allow for chimpanzee viewing and additional available activities.

In addition to chimp walks, the forest area offers a unique wetland sanctuary – the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. The reserve is excellent for birding, with one of the best guided birding trails in East Africa, plus additional primate viewing (5-6 species). Ndali Lodge offers farm walks through the vanilla plantations where they grow and process vanilla for resale and export. Travelers can also visit the Ndali gardens where a wide variety of fruits and vegetables are grown for use in the lodge kitchen and for sale in local markets.

For those travelers interested in a cultural exchange, lunch at Tinka’s is an authentic cultural experience that allows for travelers to experience a traditional Ugandan meal in a local home. Tinka will explain the background of each dish as travelers dine, from farming and harvesting methods, to recipes and cooking methods.
