We’re excited to share that Imvelo Safari Lodges has announced a new horse riding activity for guests at Bomani or Camelthorn! The first activity of its kind in Southern Hwange, seven magnificent and well trained horses are making their way to their new stables on the Camelthorn concession, and are ready for this fantastic new activity to kick off on March 1, 2018.
Imvelo likes to do things differently – with a focus experiential safaris such as game viewing from canoes on the Zambezi or tracking elephant herds on mountain bikes in southwest Hwange at Jozibanini Camp. Camelthorn and Bomani, two of our top rated properties in Hwange, already offer some exceptional experiential safari experiences such as transfers by rail car, close up photography in the underground blind and authentic and enriching cultural immersions. Now, in partnership with Hwange Horseback Safaris (HHS), owned and operated by Dennis and Sharon Nel, Imvelo brings the latest addition to their experiential safari model – a variety of daily horse riding activities to choose from with something for everyone, ranging from beginner level to experienced riders.
HHS are among the pioneers of horseback safaris in Zimbabwe and have been combining their love for the African bush and horses for over a decade. Together with an impeccable safety record and a thriving stable of well-schooled horses, comprising of thoroughbreds, Percheron, quarter horses and farm breeds, they ensure that each guest is well catered for on any ride.
It is therefore with much excitement that Imvelo and HHS begin this partnership in Hwange offering this new exclusive and exhilarating experience!

In line with Imvelo’s ethos, this new activity has been brought to life in partnership with their communities. It has provided new jobs and will support Nganyana Village close to Camelthorn through guests participating in the cultural ride. During a visit the villagers will gladly share the different ways they try make an income including basket weaving, beading and jewelry making – riders are welcome to try their hand at these crafts too!
The magnificent and expansive savanna vleis that border Camelthorn along with the Ngamo Plains make for the best safari riding areas in Zimbabwe and Imvelo guests will now be able to enjoy leisurely strolls or more adventurous rides all led by experienced horse guides! The sense of freedom, silence and tranquility, with a touch of adrenaline thrown in, brings visitors closer to nature.
The open nature of the terrain makes it a wonderful environment for anybody to ride – even if you have never been on a horse before! This is the ultimate new safari activity to enjoy when visiting Hwange!
