Though most of the country can expect some rainfall during this season, the Caribbean side shines! Tortuguero National Park is known as Costa Rica’s “little Amazon.” This remote wildlife-rich area is accessible only by plane or boat and boasts a large diversity of bird species, several monkeys, sloths, caiman, and iguanas to name a few – it is one of the best places to observe wildlife in the country! The tropical beaches around Tortuguero are key nesting sites for green sea turtles from July to September. Activities include touring the navigable rainforest canals by boat and self-exploration of the lodge’s gardens and rainforest trails.
The Pacuare River meanders down the Atlantic slope of the Talamanca mountain range, through the dense rainforest of the Pacuare Protected Zone, until it finally reaches the Caribbean Sea on Costa Rica’s central coast. Although the river is primarily known for its challenging rapids and its excellent white water rafting opportunities, it also features some remarkable scenery characterized by lush primordial rainforest, lowland tropical forest and dramatic towering waterfalls. This pristine natural terrain along the banks of the river provides a haven for wide variety wildlife including, among others: river otters, jaguars and ocelots, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, sloths, iguanas, coatis and raccoon. Birders will delight in the colorful avian life, with chesnut mandibled toucans, macaws, motmots, egrets, kingfishers, and herons making daily appearances. Included activities are white water rafting, hiking, canopy adventure tour, bird-watching, and tropical canyoning!
Located just south of the bustling beach town of Puerto Viejo along the Southern Caribbean Coast, Punta Cocles is an exquisite Caribbean beach paradise. Dubbed the capital of this coastal region, this little village features a long stretch of picture-perfect coastline boasting 3-kilometres of soft golden sand fringed by swaying palms and lapped be warm crystalline waters. The village’s cultural influences are interesting to be sure: a mix of Afro-Caribbean, Bribri Indian, tico and hippyesque counterculture, this small port town is an anthropological study in itself. Visitors come here to immerse themselves in the sea, sun and sand, indulge in seaside relaxation and discover the harmony of the rainforest. Enjoy a thrilling surf, explore the underwater wonderland of colorful coral reefs inhabited by exotic marine life, take a stroll along the coastal trail, spot monkeys playing in the trees, a host of tropical birdlife as well as sloths, green iguanas and crabs. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the amazing Cahuita National Park and visit the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and the Talamanca Indian Reserve.
