New Frontiers are excited to announce that the South African law regarding the requirements for foreign minors to travel with an Unabridged Birth Certificate has finally been abolished!
It has taken four years of intense lobbying to have the law, which cast doubt on South Africa’s reputation as a family-friendly destination, scrapped. As per the full Travel Advisory issued by the Department of Home Affairs on the 8th of November 2019, going forward all foreign visa-exempt children traveling with a parent or guardian will not be required to present a birth certificate at the port of entry.
The Unabridged Birth Certificate requirement does remain in place for foreign minors who are traveling unaccompanied and for those passport holders requiring visas.
It’s important to note that this only applies to those families travelling within South Africa as Botswana and Namibia still require all children to be in possession of an Unabridged Birth Certificate at the port of entry.
