Many travelers visit to Costa Rica and never see downtown San José. Costa Rica Sun Tours (CRST) shares some highlights for your guests on why to visit Costa Rica’s capital city on CRST’s guided San José Walking City Tour!

San Jose is not just Costa Rica’s capital, but also a social and cultural center. The city is divided into many neighborhoods called barrios, and each offers a variety of amenities and a personality all its own.

Downtown San Jose, known as “el centro” or “Chepe,” is reserved mostly for business and politics. A pedestrian mall occupies Avenida Central, where retail stores, hotels and political offices fan out into the city. The downtown area is also the city’s cultural center: the Gold, Jade and National Museums as well as the performing

arts buildings – such as the famous National Theater – are located here. Walking the city parks also adds to the experience of San José – the truly green jewels of the capital are Parque Nacional, Parque Morazán and Parque España. And don’t forget to experience the historic building of the Central Market, the most iconic public space of the city…

Accommodations are limited, although a few chic hotels frame the Plaza de la Democracia and other parks such as Hotel Presidente.

The upscale sections of Barrio Amon, Otoya and Aranjuez are home to some of Costa Rica’s most

historic and beautiful buildings. The area’s grand, colonial architecture features hand-carved woodwork and wraparound porches, capitalizing the neighborhood’s charm. Several restored hotels, fine dining restaurants and “cafés” or coffee shops have appeared in both Amon and Aranjuez, adding to the area’s appeal. Among cafes and restaurants CRST recommends: Café Miel, Café La Mancha, Underground Brew Café, Alma de Amón Restaurant and Silvestre Restaurant.

A few blocks walking distance from San José’s downtown is Barrio Escalante, that in the last

few years has become a true gastronomic epicenter with restaurants, “cafes”, pups and craft bars, or beer gardens.

At the western end of Paseo Colon, beautiful La Sabana Park offers wide, open spaces, eucalyptus trees, a small lake, an art museum and Costa Rica’s new soccer stadium – the perfect respite from the busy city. The neighborhoods of Sabana Norte and Sabana Sur surround the park, and are favorites among young professionals, students and residents that prefer the hustle and bustle of the capital city.

La Sabana is a prime destination for overnight guests in San Jose. Your clients can choose from budget hostels to the most luxurious boutique hotels in the city. To name a few: Grano de Oro, Park Inn by Radisson and the Crowne Plaza Corobici.
