Our partners at Costa Rica Sun Tours have shared an update regarding the safety of visiting Poás Volcano.
Poás Volcano National Park was closed for safety concerns in April 2017 due to increasing gas and ash eruptions. A lot a pressure has been put on park and government officials to re-open the park. Nearby communities depend on both national and international tourists, and the park entrance fees from over 300,000 visitors per year represent an important source of revenue for the government.
Park officials held an informational session on June 15 which CRST’s Head of Operations Leo Chaves attended with some of their guides. Currently the park remains closed. Three safety bunkers in the higher risk zones are being considered, and new guidelines for visitation and reservations are being created. Officials are considering 20-minute visits and up to 50 visitors at a time, providing gas masks and helmets if necessary. Advance reservations will be required, however there will be no guarantee that the park will be open. The park will allow unused entrance tickets to be used for a future date, but no refunds will be issued.
In light of these conditions, Costa Rica Sun Tours does not consider it a good idea to promote visits to the Park, yet. Visiting Poás Volcano will never be totally safe as long as it remains an Active Volcano. We recommend waiting before re-programming or adding visits to Poás Volcano in your itineraries. We will keep you posted as to any new events.
