Sampling Guatemala’s Street Food

Maya Trails is set to release a new walking tour of Antigua with a focus on exploring Guatemala’s unique and delicious street food. Antigua is best explored on foot with its gorgeous colonial architecture and cobbled streets, and Maya Trails guides have the scoop on the best spots for sampling the culinary treats on offer throughout the city.

The walk begins with breakfast street food at “Tanque La Union.” It is next to a park with an area where Mayan women wash their clothes, so breakfast comes with a bit of local culture mixed in. Walkers move on to another great spot for breakfast (if they still have a bit of room for more!) street food on the side street of the beautiful Baroque Merced Church.

From there, guests dive into the regular local market to see and learn about all types of produce (vegetables, fruits, poultry, meats, seafood, all types of desserts, etc.). Best of all is the discovery of unique produce only found in Guatemala.

Throughout the morning, guests will visit various comedores to learn about street foods, and to bookmark for a later visit in their trip. They might go back later in the day for fresh chicharones (pork rinds) or a typical Guatemalan plate of Chicken Pepian – chicken with a spicy pumpkin and sesame sauce, or even Kak’ik – traditional Mayan turkey soup with spices. Maya Trails’ knowledgeable guides let travelers know which spots are safest for tourists to visit.

Maya Trails also offers an option of a hands-on tortilla making experience in the market. Guests see a presentation from a local tortilla vendor, then have the chance to try making their own. The class is followed by a trip to the local comedor, where guests take their “Muñeco of Torillas,” a set of 12 or 24 tortillas, to the local comedor to be incorporated into a meal.

The walking tour has a sweet ending with a trip to Fernandos Kaffee, undisputed home to the best coffee and chocolate in Antigua. They roast their own coffee in house and produce their artisanal chocolate there as well. After a bit of coffee and chocolate, Maya Trails strongly suggests that travelers take a nap!
